9 Mistakes We Make With Lipstick


1. Forgetting to exfoliate
All good makeup begins with proper skin prep, and your lips are no exception. Be sure to shed dead skin cells by buffing with a warm damp towel or exfoliating with a gentle scrub like the all-natural Lush Mint Julips, which contains moisturising peppermint oil.


2. Not taking time to prime
As you would prime your face skin before foundation, apply a moisturising layer to your lips that will smooth out fine lines and act as a magnet for lip colour. We like the colour-free MAC Prep + Prime Lip. Alternatively if your lips are especially dry, apply a lip balm like the Bioderma Atoderm Moisturising Stick to rehydrate them 15 minutes before applying makeup on top.


3. Not choosing the right shade
Lipstick beginners will know that the sea of shades on the shelves can be intimidating. Start by following these skin tone rules from a MAC Senior Artist and take a note of these shades that are designed to suit all: Topshop Lipstick in Mescaline (a golden neutral), MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Creme In Your Coffee (a dark toffee pink), NARS Satin Lip Pencils in Rikugien (a rose pink) and Hyde Park (a deep berry red) and MAC Ruby Woo (a true red).


4. Not finding the right formula
This is personal choice, but different formulas mean different rules. A matte texture will have longer staying power but might feel dry and tight on the lips so be sure to moisturise first and apply with precision. A creamy texture is more forgiving but will need to be applied more frequently, especially to the middle of your lips. If you go for gloss, choose one that is moisture-rich and highly pigmented so you only need a single swipe.


5. Shunning lip liner
Lip liner got a bad rap for a while but its merits are worth celebrating. Make sure it matches your lipstick (don’t go a shade darker a la Pam Anderson’s Baywatch days) and use it to frame your lipstick, tracing your lip line to prevent your lipstick ‘bleeding’ outside of it.


6. Not layering for longevity
This is another time when lip liner proves its worth. Apply it all over the lips before lipstick, and then again on top to pack the pigment into the lips. This sandwiching technique is a trick used for the red carpet and makes your colour ultra-dense.


7. Not setting your lips
For the ultimate staying power, you need to set your lip colour. An old school trick is to hold a tissue over your lips and dust translucent powder across it. This fine film will mattify and set it. Alternatively a ‘topcoat’ like Lipcote is ideal for matte textures or to maintain a dewy finish spritz on a spray toner like the Dr. Hauschka Facial Toner or a makeup setter like Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray.


8. Letting it transfer to teeth
Over-application will result in your lippy caking or glooping and potentially transferring to your teeth. Go light and remember to blot with a tissue immediately after application to remove excess product.


9. Not drinking through a straw
While we won’t tell you to avoid locking lips (being kissable is an intentional consequence of wearing lippy), we recommend sipping through a straw to avoid losing your lipstick on the side of your drink.
